Part of being a college student means you are learning and gaining experience in your preferred field everyday. You take all the opportunities you can to network, find jobs, and boost your resume, including taking part in an internship. At Stevenson University, within the business communication department, I am required to take at least one internship before I graduate.
This year, as a junior, I have taken part in my first for-credit internship. While I will still need to do another one during my last senior semester, I figured why not get a little extra experience…right?
I landed a part-time internship with Route One Apparel, where I would spend 15 hours a week until I reached my end goal of 120 hours. I went into the experience excited, and nervous, as I was unsure if I was ready for the work force. I can say confidently, more than 120 hours later, that I am most certainly ready.
My time at Route One was more than just an internship. I learned copious amounts of information, not only about social media marketing (my intern title), but about myself and all that goes into successfully operating a small business.
I have taken on a position at the company for the summer, as a paid employee. I am eager and excited to further develop my relationships in the office, and to learn even more than I have already, This is experience has been one to boost my confidence and better prepare me for a lifetime in the marketing work force.
With this I encourage all college students to pursue an internship, paid or unpaid, that makes them nervous. Go for the one that is intimidating, the one that may push your limits, and the one that gives you the most potential.
The funny thing about internships is that they can be great, or not so great, but either way they teach you more than you might realize. After all, it may turn out to be more than just an internship.
In the beginning of 2016, it was estimated that there would be over one million new cancer cases within the United States in that year, according to the American Cancer Society. This statistic is one that is not only shocking, but tragic.
Cancer is often looked at as the plague of the century, with nearly every person knowing one or more people who have had or has the disease. Cancer is something many people fear, yet lack precaution and effort to prevent it.
Using information provided by “The truth About Cancer foundation (TTAC),” “Health.com,” and the “American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR),” it has been found that there are several ‘super foods’ which lower your risk for cancer.
There are several categories into which these particular food items fall, including: greens, vegetables, fruits, proteins, and spices/herbs. In addition to maintaining a fresh and healthy diet, there are also some foods in which you should avoid, containing cancer-causing chemicals. Ahead, you will discover the foods that contain the cancer-fighting qualities and the reason they are beneficial.
Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, brussels sprouts, and collard greens are all great options when looking for a particular plant to keep you healthy. TTAC foundation emphasizes the benefit of spinach within your diet. It is said to have extremely beneficial vitamins, and minerals to help keep your body strong and healthy.
The benefit of this particular green is heightened with the fact that it is “Particularly rich in folate and fiber – two elements that doctors believe are essential to cancer prevention – make spinach one of our favorite cancer-fighting foods,” according to The Truth About Cancer foundation.
Kale, spinach, and other greens are also mentioned as some of the top cancer-fighting foods by the AICR.
While it seems obvious that vegetables be a part of our diet, it is important to know which ones add the most value to your effort of living a cancer-free life. Broccoli and tomatoes are seen as favorites within this category, as both TTAC, and Health.com, put these on their list of super foods.
Tomatoes include an antioxidant known as lycopene, which has been studied and found to prevent cancer cell growth in many types of cancer such as lung, prostate and endometrial; however, there is a catch. The most lycopene is ingested when tomatoes are cooked, as opposed to when they are raw.
Broccoli is another fantastic cancer-fighting food due to its high percentage of glucoraphanin and indole-3-carbinol. These are antioxidants that not only have been found to fight certain cancer cells such as breast cancer, but boost your body’s enzymes that protect your cells.
Fruit is not only seen as a healthy and sweet alternative to junk food, but is a crucial element of a healthy diet and well-charged immunity. While citrus fruits are known to boost your immunity, berries are the largest named fruit category when it comes to those with cancer-fighting abilities.
Some of these powerful berries are strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and acai berries. The reason these are so beneficial, is that they are all said to be full of phytonutrients, which slow the development and growth of cancer cells, as reported by Health.com. AICR, and TTAC.
Pack on the Proteins
While there are many foods considered to contain a high amount of protein, there are only a couple that do the trick when aiming to ward off evil cancer cells. Both the AICR and Health.com list nuts as a source of disease reducing proteins.
Walnuts in particular, have been found to block receptors that are responsible for the growth of cancer cells, more specifically in breast cancer. Health.com also states that this cell-blocking feature is known as “phytosterols (cholesterol-like molecules found in plants).”
Spice it up
Turmeric and green tea have been found to be extremely powerful in not only preventing cancer, but also help fight cancer cells within those whose are receiving treatment, as stated by TTAC.
While green tea is actually an herb, it holds the same natropathic benefits as the turmeric spice. Dried green tea leaves soaked in water not only make a delicious drink but are often used as a daily form of cancer prevention. A characteristic known as catechins, found within the tea leaves, have been proven to prohibit cancer cell growth and reduce the size of cancerous tumors.
Turmeric is another wildly popular spice that is known for its active ingredient curcumin. According to Health.com “It stops the development of cancer by interfering with the cellular signaling aspects of the chronic disease.”
Foods to Avoid
Not only is it beneficial to know cancer-fighting foods but, it is also important to recognize foods that can increase the likelihood of cancer cell growth.
According to Health.com., animal fats and processed meats are important factors to avoid when aiming for a strong immunity. Excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to the formation cancerous cells.
Certain meats, cheeses, and butter, can contain a high amount of saturated fats, which is connected to obesity and poor overall health. Nitrates are a preserving agent found in processed meats which have been found to increase your chances of contracting esophageal or stomach cancer.
Maintaining a fresh and wholesome diet, while avoiding processed foods, can lead to a prolonged and healthy life. Taking care of your body can help the number of cancer cases per year decrease significantly.
“Big Magic,” a novel by Elizabeth Gilbert, is an enticing read for those aspiring to live their most creative life, as well as those seeking a little motivation.
As a writer myself, I found “Big Magic” to be encouraging and intensely relatable, all the while urging me to think about creativity in a way I never had before. Gilbert takes you through the many stagess of living a creative life, from fear, to doubt, to completing a work, and finally to becoming successful and being proud of what you have created.
Gilbert refers to creativity as its own being. A genius, she calls it. This idea helps you to see your creativity as something that is difficult to control, making you not entirely responsible for difficulties such as writers block. Gilbert speaks about ideas as if they come and go as the wind, warning to to grab a hold of ideas that are calling your name before they quickly slip away.
Not only does she refer to creativity in the sense of authorship, but she touches on all aspects of creativity. GIlbert wrestles with common belifs about creative lifestlyes, challenging you as a reader to reconsider the way you view your passions.
The way Gilbert includes stories and opinions of other well-known artists challenges the reader’s thoughts, and brings a personal feeling to the novel. She often refers to her memoir “Eat, Pray, Love,” when describing the life cycle of creating a work, as well as to further inform her readers about her life and previously written memoir.
Much like the style of her memoir, Gilbert uses detailed aspects of her own life and experiences to engage the readers. This is my favorite aspect of the book, making me feel as though I am simply having a conversation with Gilbert. Her use of common language and personal style is what makes “Big Magic” stang out in the crowd, inticing readers to sneak a peek.
I would reccomend “Big Magic” to anyone who enjoys an easy read full of inspiration. “Big Magic” is not only gaining popularity within the creative community, but is reaching large crowds with nominations such as the National Book Critics Circle, and National Book Awards.
